May I ask who in our group is either live on Epicor ERP 10.x or actively engaged in implementing it or upgrading to it?

Scott

Good morning Marvin and Michael,

Thank you for your replies!

Here at FSIP, we have had several extended discussions with Epicor and our systems supplier about the appropriate system architecture for our implementation of Epicor ERP 10.1.400.xx. We have received conflicting "guidance" regarding the appropriate use, mix and sizing of SSD's, 15k HD's and 10k HD's, the appropriate configuration of this storage as RAID 5 and RAID 10 for different purposes, and the appropriate VMWare configuration for performance and disaster recovery. Would either or both of you be willing to share what system architecture you have implemented and, with hindsight, what you think you may have done differently?

Up time and demand is huge for our company. Our server is housed in a data center and currently we have 5 separate locations accessing the server. As a result we must use terminal servers to parse the load of users. We cannot run the client locally from the sites as it requires far too much band width. That being said, we process very large amounts of transactions. We have a single Fusion-IO drive in the server. Before I came to this company, they found a standard RAID with spindle drives was not able to process fast enough. While on Epicor 9, they had SQL back end, but the Progress interface was always causing problems under heavy load. They had Fusion-IO then as well. The single best improvement for performance is eliminating the Progress! We have not entered our peak load season yet, be we still process high volumes of transactions and this server performs great. The cost was easily offset by the performance of the Fusion-IO drive. I run DMT loads almost exactly 10x faster in E10.

We have a small user base of 32 licensed users. Currently sql server and
the app server are running on the same VM. Plans are in place to move the
app server to a separate VM. We are using 15K SCSI drive in a RAID 10
configuration. I would not recommend RAID 5 it's only benefit is increased
storage capacity, but suffers from slower write speed. SSD's are general
faster than 15K drives if you are willing to spend more, and the Fusion-io
drives (SSD on PCI), that Michael's using, are even faster and more
expensive.

Our VM has enough memory for the SQL Server 2012 process to use it's max
capacity of 64GB. Epicor 10 is supposed to be supported on SQL Server 2014,
but I'm not sure if Epicor can use the new in-memory OLTP features. Seems
like the future growth in performance will be in-memory databases.

Never use RAID 5 for a database! Way to easily corrupted and much too slow on writes!
