On January 31, 2020, the US Department of Defense (DoD) released the long-awaited Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) version 1.0.

This consolidated standard for implementing cybersecurity across the defense industrial base (DIB) was built on existing requirements such as NIST SP 800-171, NIST SP 800-53, and AIA NAS9933. Specialists from the University Affiliated Research Centers, as well as the Federally Funded Research and Development Centers, worked on the CMMC framework.

The goal of CMMC is to heighten cybersecurity regulations for aerospace and defense contractors working with the Department of Defense (DoD) in order to avoid significant compromises of sensitive information managed by these companies. More than 300,000 contractors within the DIB will all need this certification to secure DoD contracts.

Contractors will be responsible for implementing key cybersecurity requirements, but the CMMC requires that a third-party auditor assess their compliance.

The CMMC outlines five levels of aerospace & defense compliance certifications that represent the ability of a company's cybersecurity system to safeguard highly-confidential government data.

Achieve CMMC Compliance Goals with ERP Solution

Few contractors have the skills or resources to achieve their compliance goals on their own. Many turn to their ERP solution provider for help.

From financial information to manufacturing formulas, advanced ERP software can shield the most sensitive data from hackers. ERP is often considered to be the first line of defense for information security and governance, thanks to key features like the management of user permission and Internet of things (IoT) endpoint security.

Investing in ERP software means businesses rely on one single, unified system that yields more consistent data. This allows for greater data control. Dashboards and customizable reports are built into ERP software for increased visibility of performance and security, a great asset when trying to ward off fraudulent practices.

Some providers are able to monitor attacks and threats in real-time and calculate vulnerability risks to prioritize remediation. They can also block unauthorized system changes, and offer updates on high-risk areas. When it comes to data traceability, ERP systems have the ability to monitor inventory and supply chain components to ensure production meets the expected demands. This is an essential part of regulatory compliance.
